3 Secrets To Saying Thanks

You know you’re not doing this alone. You know how valuable your financial partners are to the fulfillment of your ministry. But have you taken the time to thank those people? 3 secrets to expressing gratitude for those who are partnering with you to make an impact in the world.  

Here’s a great example of gratitude. Paul says of his partnership to the Philippian church, “In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:5-6)


1 - Pray For Your Financial Partners

Paul was way busier and more fruitful than you will ever be, yet Paul had a strategy that led to consistent prayer for those that partnered with him. He was genuinely grateful for their partnership and joyfully thanked God for them.  What Romans 8:31-32 says about fundraising.

You should be specific in the ways that you are grateful, and that will keep you from being overwhelming when you tell your financial partners you are praying for them. A “thank you” that dribbles on forever will come across less like a “thank you” and more like a lecture, or worse, a thing you are begrudgingly doing. Think through what specific things you are grateful for and keep it short.


2- Keep The Main Thing The Main Thing

Later in the book of Philippians, Paul will show that through the Philippians’ partnership, his team shared in the reward. Paul separates their partnership from just being a personal investment in him to being a personal investment in God’s work. Spend time when you are thanking your financial partners to share the stories of a life their financial giving has impacted. Share a story of someone coming to Christ, groups starting, or conversations happening to show their prayers and finances are making an eternal impact. Their investment has impacted one, but continued investment will impact thousands; highlight areas of the ministry that can be multiplied to many more lives.

While you want to acknowledge the impact that has already happened and point to a beautiful new reality in the future, this is not the time for making a financial ask. Spend time just being thankful for them, encouraging them, and praying for them.


3 - Express The Return On Investment

Paul expresses that when someone invests in what God is doing in the world, it not only has impact in far off places, but it’s also is having impact in the life of the one committed to partnering. Paul knows the ones investing financially are being invested spiritually by God, and so he encourages his partners in that reality.  How to talk about your financial partnership as an investment.

So many times we have the propensity to not do something simply because we can’t do it for all. It’s better to thank 10 people than 0. Don’t not express gratitude because you can’t do it for everyone. Do what you can and do it often, and your partners will genuinely be excited and grateful to be a part of what you’re doing.
