Don't Limit the Generosity of Your Donors

Sometimes your ministry isn't structured in a way that allows for generous gifts. If you're raising money as a missionary, you should know where to direct someone that would like to give a large gift - which often happens at the end of a calendar year.

A good rule of thumb is the largest gift you will receive will be about 10% of your budget. So, if your budget is $100K a year, in my experience, the largest gift you'll receive will be $10K. Do you know who to contact in order to allow someone to give a gift that large? You need to ask a few questions of your organization. Don't let such a small thing be a stumbling block to anyone's generosity.

But what about the guy you know that can give $25K? Or $50K? Or $100K? In that case, you may need to take a look at how your organization structures giving to allow donors to give according to their capacity. Is there even a place for someone to go to give a large gift? Find out who the person is, so that when that gift comes, you're ready.

Whatever it takes, do your best to not limit the generosity of your donors.
